Old Fashioned Sugarcane Pressing at Hastings' OUR Center

Posted: November 30, 2010

Slow Food First Coast recently partnered with the Community in Schools OUR Center on an Old Fashioned Sugarcane Pressing project.  The center's children learned how to press their own fresh Florida sugarcane and reconnect with an old Southern tradition.  The homemade sugarcane press will serve as the centerpiece of the sculpture garden at the center and the kids will next be decorating the garden with Southern food-themed art pieces they will create themselves.  The activity, intended to help children learn about local food traditions and preserve them for the future, was part of Slow Food First Coast's ongoing series of events aimed at educating children and reconnecting them to the pleasures of good, clean, and fair food.  This project was made possible wih the support of the St. Johns Cultural Council serving St. Johns County, and the State of the Arts License Plate Program.
