Organic and Natural Farms
Saint Johns Family Farm
Manuel and Yvonne Granados have carved out of the woods a unique small farm in the northwest corner of St. Johns County. After hearing the stories about industrial egg factories, they began to investigate raising their own hens on a small scale, following the methods of “pastured poultry” promoted by Joel Salatin, the guru of sustainable farming. Their mission is to provide to the public fresh poultry and eggs that are fed only healthy feed and greens - no drugs or hormones.
In March 2010 they began farming. Today they have a large flock of about 370 “layers” which are contained in a 2400 sq. ft. aviary. The floor is covered with recycled wood chips from a tree trimmer company which delivers them to the Granados instead of to the county dump. When the temperature reaches a certain level, a misting system engages and the hens are cooled down during the heat of the day. The Granados also practice raising broilers using the “pastured bird” method which involves daily moving a special pen with a tractor to expose new pasture for hen scratching! The Granados are delighted with the public’s positive response at area farmers’ markets to their natural and humanely raised food.
