Organic and Natural Farms
Musickal Acres
Musickal Acres is a small farm in Baldwin, FL, west of Jacksonville, which is owned by Betty and Wayne Musick and managed by their son, Scott Johnson. When they bought the property in 2007, it already had many pecan trees growing on it. They have since planted more, and now tend about 70 pecan trees.
The pecans are Musickal Acres’ claim to fame, however. They have several varieties--small seedlings, which are rich in oil; Stuarts, which are rounder in shape; Elliots, which have a more oblong form; and papershells, which grow long and are easy to open.
In the fall, the pecans are harvested with a tractor attachment that rolls over them and deposits them in a catching bin. Once several hundred pounds have been gathered, they are taken to a “cracker,” where the pecans are poured into a special machine that cracks them open and removes some of the shells. Then, they are finished by hand, each nut meat carefully cleaned of any shell bits before being packaged.
Please contact him to acquire some of these special Southern nuts. Mr Johnson can make deliveries on Fridays during the harvest season to commercial food establishments--certain minimum quantities apply. You can buy nuts at the farm if you call ahead.
